Galerie Urs Meile is internationally recognized as a pioneering gallery that fosters contemporary art across China and Europe, while facilitating meaningful cultural exchange between the two regions.
Founded in 1992 in Lucerne, Galerie Urs Meile has cultivated a distinctive position as one of the first Western galleries to engage in China, beginning activities there in 1995 and maintaining a branch in Beijing since 2005, today under the directorship of René Meile. Under the directorship of Karin Seiz-Meile, the gallery expanded its Swiss presence with the opening of its first Zurich exhibition space on Rämistrasse in 2023 and, in 2025, completed the transition from Lucerne to Zurich with the inauguration of a new headquarter space on Ankerstrasse. A third exhibition space in Ardez, in the Engadin region of the Swiss Alps, complements the gallery’s Swiss presence.
Firmly rooted in Switzerland as well as in China, Galerie Urs Meile cultivates a diverse, inclusive, and forward-thinking program — positioning itself as a reference point within both the local art community and the international art world. The gallery represents artists across different generations and media — including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and video — and stages 14 to 16 exhibitions annually across its four spaces in Zurich, Beijing, and Ardez.
Galerie Urs Meile is committed to long-term relationships with artists and collectors, emphasizing sustained engagement and collaboration. By fostering connections that transcend generational and cultural boundaries, the gallery supports the growth of vibrant art communities, bringing diverse perspectives into the international spotlight. Serving as a counterbalance to art production driven solely by ideology or market forces, Galerie Urs Meile contributes actively to a cultural landscape enriched by diverse narratives and artistic expressions.
