Galerie Urs Meile is pleased to announce narratief, an exhibition featuring the Zurich-based artist duo Wiedemann/Mettler. The exhibition brings together textile works and constructed photography, which collectively create a quiet, deliberately decelerated visual world. The figures painted with bleach on velvet fabric appear like traces of an internal narrative—ephemeral, organic, almost dream-like. The photographs, conversely, construct spaces where reality and imagination blend, thereby forming an atmospheric narrative of their own. By deliberately using the misspelling narratief, the title points to the unfinished, the open-ended, and the act of storytelling as a quest. In this sense, the works build upon the tradition of poetic image-thinking, as described by the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard (1884–1962): spaces and forms become resonating bodies of imagination. Placed opposite each other in the exhibition, the works enter into a dialogue—they tell stories of and about one another without ever allowing themselves to be fixed or defined.

Since 2002, Wiedemann/Mettler has worked together as an artistic duo that approaches the world from a dialogical perspective. Daniel Mettler’s (b. 1965, Switzerland) staged photographs offer associative starting points for Pascale Wiedemann (b. 1966, Switzerland), inspiring her to create works of almost physical emotionality. This process results in pieces that find their form in various media such as sculpture, installation, or painting. Wiedemann/Mettler’s work creates a juxtaposition of emotion and rationality, spatial interest and bodily intimacy. The processual aspect of their artistic practice is shaped by the reaction to and interaction with each other’s works—a symbiotically charged process that generates closeness and raises questions. Across media, materials, and structures, their individual works are always a reference to themselves and their counterpart.
